WWF-Pakistan and SSGC initiate beach cleaning

Karachi, WWF-Pakistan in collaboration with Sui Southern Gas Company Ltd (SSGC) organized a Beach Cleaning event to support Earth Hour-2016. The event was organized on Tuesday, 8 March 2016 at Dolmen Mall, Clifton Beach Karachi. The event aimed at creating awareness among students about significance of Earth Hour, waste management and other environmental challenges faced by Pakistan. The event was attended by around 300 students from four different public schools. The students participated in beach cleaning, quiz competition and other team building activities. They cleaned around one and half kilometers of the Clifton Beach and collected 200 bags of garbage.

Speaking on the occasion, Shahbaz Islam, GM Corporate Communication, SSGC said that organization is striving to develop a sense of ownership among students about their natural assets. He also said that SSGC is organizing regular activities with support of WWF-Pakistan to educate students and other visitors about significance of marine ecosystem. Sania Rauf Khan, Head of CPF department of WWF-Pakistan said that there is a need for conservation and protection of marine life in Pakistan which faces multiple threats particularly that of pollution. In this connection, beach cleaning activity is organized to raiseawareness among students and youth about ecological importance of the natural resources. She also said that such activities help change the mind-set of people and reduce the amount of litter thrown by visitors at the beach.
