Start Date: December 2007
End Date: December 2008
Summary
The massive earthquake during October 2005 in Northern Pakistan had inflicted damages on community and private infrastructures in Palas valley that exacerbated the misery of people due to their poverty and the tough physical and weather conditions in the area. In the backdrop of human suffering, BirdLife International managed to raise funds for rehabilitation of infrastructure in Palas Valley. Works were initially started on the reconstruction of bridle paths that were necessary to claim access to the earthquake affected area in Palas valley. A total of 25.8 kilometer bridle paths were constructed at a cost of £11,025 by October 2006.
A (second) proposal for utilization of £ 31,809 (inclusive of £11,025) was prepared in October 2006 indicating a full scheme of nature of activities, their budget and proposed time frame. Proposed activities included repair of bridges, irrigation channels, micro hydro-power, terracing of fields etc. In May 2007, the deconcentration of Power to Local Level in Pakistan Project, WWF – Pakistan’s project approached Palas Conservation and Development Federation (PCDF) and they signed a MoU for carrying out the proposed activities.
