Conservation of Mangrove Ecosystem at Keti Bunder
Project Category: Forests
Donor Agency: Sui Southern Gas Company
Start Date: July 2007
Planned End Date: June 2008
Summary
Keti Bunder is located on the east of Karachi in Thatta District. It is the component of Inmdus Delta mudflats and mangrove swamps. There are approximately 75599 ha of mangrove forest along Keti Bunder. The dominant species of mangroves in the area is Avicenna marina, whereas Rhizophora mucronata and Ceriops togal also exist in some areas. The communities use mangrove as fuelwood and fodder for their livestock. This causes extensive damage to mangrove ecosystem.
Under this project, it is intended to undertake mangrove plantation through involvement of local communities. About 300 ha or 30,000 plants would be raised and maintained with participation of local communities.
Objective
The objectives of the project are:
- Degraded mangrove forests around Keti Bunder are rehabilitated.
- Awareness and capacity building of local communities in mangrove conservation is enhanced through sustainable use.
