Boundary Demarcation & Re-notification of Protected Areas Project – Phase II

Project Category: Protected Areas
Donor Agencies: Pakistan Petroleum Exploration and Production Companies Association (PPEPCA)
Start Date: July 2007
Planned End Date:  June 2009

Summary

The Government of Pakistan, through years of efforts brought almost 11% of the country’s total land under various categories of Protected Areas (PA). There are over 231 Protected Areas of different categories such as National Parks (NPs), Wildlife Sanctuaries (WS) and Game Reserves (GR).
Protected Areas are facing a number of problems of varying nature. The upfront problem is the lack of accurate demarcation of Protected Areas boundaries that results in multitude of various resource and management complexities such as encroachments by land mafia and surrounding communities, inter-departmental conflicts, PA management and community conflicts and intrusion of unwanted developmental activities. Moreover, lack of clear ownership, vague and ambiguous boundaries of Protected Areas have resulted into complexities during the planning and implementation of different development activities including petroleum exploration and production in the country. This is why this project has been conceived with duration of two years.

Objective

To translate Protected Areas notifications on to topographic GIS maps, undertake ground verifications and renotify the boundaries with notifications containing geographic coordinates.
Overall Approach of the Project: The project is to be implemented in three phases.

Phase I:
Consultative workshop with key stakeholders and partners to understand issues and agree on modalities of the next phases

Phase II:
Delineation and re-notification of seven selected Protected Areas and development of their indicative ecological baseline conditions

Phase III:
Replication of model developed in phase II and its extension to other Protected Areas.
