Karachi, Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 7.15 pm to 8.00 pm:
WWF-Pakistan inauguration of Earth Hour 2012 took place at WWF’s leading Green School in the South region – Dawood Public School, Karachi.
Earth Hour 2012 Official Ambassador present at the inauguration ceremony at WWF’s Green School was Tennis prodigy: Aisam Ul Haq who officially endorsed EH 2012 at the event.
WWF-Pakistan’s Green School Ambassadors of the south region collected at Dawood Public School. About 400 exclusive Green School Members from Dawood Public School, Beaconhouse School System North Nazimabad Cambridge and The City School Gulshan Cambridge inaugurated Earth Hour 2012 with Aisam Ul Haq. The ceremony opened with Green School Ambassadors singing the National Anthem with Aisam ul Haq. Candle lighting ceremony as a symbolic act to combat climate change followed.
Green Students excitedly marched along side Aisam Ul Haq to show their commitment to combating global warming and climate change. Green Students have an edge over other students as they get access to exclusive WWF events and get a chance to interact with several Official WWF Ambassadors.
Earth Hour is the world’s largest volunteer action to combat climate change led by WWF. Initiated in Sydney, Australia in 2007, it has grown to become a global movement that now involves every continent across the world. Earth Hour invites people everywhere to switch off all unnecessary lights for one hour as a symbolic act to show their commitment to saving the planet.
Earth Hour 2011 saw 5200 cities and towns in 135 countries switch off their lights. Pakistan joined 121 members of the international community on Saturday March 27th for Earth Hour 2010. Earth Hour has swept into Pakistan in a big way, bringing with it a host of significant commitments of action on the environment nation-wide.
The symbolic action of turning lights out for an hour in an expression of concern for the environment is in the process of being officially observed in hundreds of venues and thousands of people across Pakistan. This year on March 31, WWF hopes to unite even more people to come together and take part in Earth Hour 2012, through the one thing that truly unites us all; the planet!
