WWF welcomes CM comment about saving Canal Trees

WWF-Pakistan appreciates the commitment by the Punjab Chief Minister, Mr. Shahbaz Sharif that no trees will be cut along the Lahore Canal Road. WWF-Pakistan is one of the parties to the court case filed in the Lahore High Court against the proposed road widening project that would cut thousands of trees. The proposed project is also in contradiction with National Environmental Policy. WWF-Pakistan is aware of the need to relieve the pressure from the increasing traffic in the city, but proposes more intelligent solutions including “soft” approaches, such as adjusting the timings of schools and offices, improving public transport and pedestrian facilities. WWF is collaborating with a number of other civil society organisations, such as the Lahore Bachao Tehrik of the Lahore Conservation Society, the Institute of Architects of Pakistan and the Pakistan Environmental Law Association.
